What is the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)?
The DMIC is an ambitious economic corridor spanning across six major Indian states. Rather than relying on organic, unplanned urbanization, the project uses planned manufacturing as the primary economic engine.
The vision goes far beyond factories. The project integrates critical infrastructure components, including:
- High-efficiency power plants
- Assured water supply networks
- Advanced logistics and high-capacity transportation hubs
- Targeted local skill-development initiatives to create sustainable jobs
The Power Engine: Synergy with the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)
A defining feature of the DMIC is its physical and operational alignment with the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), developed by DFCCIL (a Ministry of Railways enterprise).
Running from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh all the way to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai, the WDFC cuts across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. By utilizing high-axle load wagons and high-power locomotives, freight trains travel seamlessly along these tracks. The DMIC directly leverages this high-speed, high-capacity link to dramatically reduce cargo transit times and slash domestic logistics costs.

Phase 1 targets eight initial industrial cities. In Uttar Pradesh, the focal point is the Dadri–Noida–Ghaziabad Investment Region (DNGIR). Located within 50 km of the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment and adjacent to the National Capital Region (NCR), this region serves as a prime nexus for industrial expansion.
